The project for a new reorganisation of Neapolitan mathematical models

Abstract

Starting from the second half of the nineteenth century and up to the thirties of the twentieth century, we can note wide diffusion, production and acquisition by universities of models for mathematics research and teaching. These objects provided a valuable aid in making evident remarkable properties and scientific results related to various branches of the discipline. No less important the creation of instruments capable of tracing geometric figures to solve problems posed by engineering and other applied sciences was.
For a few decades, the models of mathematical surfaces have been studied for their historical as well as mathematical value.
The model and instrument collection of the Dipartimento di Matematica e Applicazioni “R. Caccioppoli” of the University “Federico II” of Naples requires a reorganization that aims to contextualize them in a perspective that can now provide for their use for mathematical educational and dissemination purposes.

Keywords

History and rediscovery of Cycadeoidea veronensis (Spermatophyta) in the Museum of Natural History of Verona

Abstract

This paper unveils the history of the fossil cycadacean Cycadeoidea veronensis, recovered at Verona in the mid of eighteen century and almost forgotten since the early nineteen century. The careful investigation of available literature and recently published documents, along with the examination of historical material housed in some museums allowed to identify the original specimen, displayed, but mislabeled, at the Museum of Natural History of Verona. The reconstruction of the nomenclatural history of C. veronensis indicates that the authorship of this taxon must be attributed to Solms-Laubach in Capellini and Solms-Laubach (1892). Furthermore, the micropaleontological investigation of the rocky matrix associated with the specimen allowed to assign C. veronensis to the lower part of Lower Cretaceous (upper Berriasian-upper Valanginian). The fossil represents the only one firmly dated Cycadeoidea’s specimen so far recovered in Italy.

The bryological collections of the Herbarium Horti Botanici Pisani

Abstract

The bryological collections kept in PI are of considerable importance for taxonomic and phytogeographic studies. However, most of them remained disorganised and without a Catalogue until the mid-eighties of the last century. The Botanic Museum has therefore promoted a “Bryophytes Project”, through a series of museological interventions, which have made possible the consultation of all the bryophytic specimens conserved in PI. The general catalogue is available on the website of the Botanic Museum.

Metallic State markings for the tax on the manufacture of spirits: history, catalog and storage

Abstract

The metal marks for the tax on the manufacture of spirits are to be considered museum artifacts as well as historical and representative symbols of the events that took place from the second half of the Fascist period to the proclamation of the Republic, through the Second World War events. It is precisely the historical events that mark the evident typological changes between the first marks and the post-war ones. The protection and conservation of these fascinating finds is mainly entrusted to collectors of historical bottles, but also to those of seals, lead bubbles, medals and coins. The protection and conservation of these finds is of considerable importance as evidence of historical events that have marked our country. Furthermore, the lack of bibliographic data in the literature has encouraged the drafting of this text as a guideline in this area.

The samples of the zoologist Daniele Rosa in the Museum of Zoology and Comparative Anatomy of the University of Modena and Reggio Emilia

Abstract

The project “The causes of evolution”, carried out at the University of Modena and Reggio Emilia and aimed at the digitization of the specimens and the scientific production of the zoologist Daniele Rosa, included a survey of the historical collections of the Museum of Zoology and Comparative Anatomy looking for oligochaete samples collected by the zoologist Daniele Rosa and deposited at the Museum. The survey allowed the identification of 19 samples of the oligochaetes studied by Daniele Rosa still carrying the original labelling handwritten by Rosa. Among samples, we find specimens of the species Allolobophora cuginii, that Rosa described in 1905 for the first time and that represent the holotype of that species. We also find specimens of the species Allolobophora minuscula, that could represent a second Rosa’s holotype, but the absence of inventory date and number makes this attribution at present uncertain.
